OSHA Standards Help Prevent Falls From Height

Posted on September 04, 2011 by Ronald Todd

Falls from height are a major cause of serious injuries at construction sites. OSHA regulations provide the minimum safety standards for construction projects. These regulations help eliminate construction fatalities when properly used and enforced at a jobsite.

The following are some OSHA standards that will help prevent falls from height:

  • Everyone at the jobsite must wear appropriate personal protective equipment when exposed to falls from height (29 CFR 1926.28(a) and 29 CFR 1926.104(a)).
  • Safety nets must be used when a work area has a risk of falls from height over 25 feet above the ground, water surface or other construction sit hazards that the use of ladders, scaffold, catch platforms, temporary floors, safety lines or safety harnesses are impractical (29 CFR 1926.105(a)).
  • Ladders must be used to gain safe access to all elevations when permanent or temporary stairways or suitable ramps or runways are not present (29 CFR 1926.450(a)(1)).
