Ladder Accidents Cause Construction Fatalities

Posted on September 04, 2011 by Ronald Todd

Falls from height are serious safety problems at construction sites. Ladder accidents account for over 100,000 injuries a year. A ladder can slide, tip, slip or break. Ladder accidents usually happen because:

  1. The ladder was defective.
  2. The surface was not appropriate for the ladder.
  3. The wrong ladder for the job was used.
  4. The ladder was improperly used.
  5. A ladder was not the proper tool for the job.

To avoid a ladder injury, employers must comply with OSHA safety standards under 29 CFR 1926.1053. The following is a list of some of these requirements:

  • Ladder must be appropriate for the job.
  • Personal fall protection may need to be used, such as life lines, lanyards and harnesses.
  • The ladder should not be set-up with more than a 4:1 ratio.
  • The top of the ladder should extend 3 feet over the roof.
  • The ladder must be properly secured.
  • The base of the ladder must be flat, level and secure or stabilizing equipment must be used.
  • Frequent inspects must be made to find any ladder defects.
  • Workers must keep three parts of their body in contact with the ladder when climbing.
  • Workers cannot carry heavy or bulky items while climbing.
  • Workers should not step over the ladder to the roof -- they should step to the side of the ladder onto the roof.
