Ladder Accidents Cause Construction Fatalities

Falls from height are serious safety problems at construction sites. Ladder accidents account for over 100,000 injuries a year. A ladder can slide, tip, slip or break. Ladder accidents usually happen because:
- The ladder was defective.
- The surface was not appropriate for the ladder.
- The wrong ladder for the job was used.
- The ladder was improperly used.

To avoid a ladder injury, employers must comply with OSHA safety standards under 29 CFR 1926.1053. The following is a list of some of these requirements:
- Ladder must be appropriate for the job.

- The top of the ladder should extend 3 feet over the roof.
- The ladder must be properly secured.
- The base of the ladder must be flat, level and secure or stabilizing equipment must be used.

- Workers must keep three parts of their body in contact with the ladder when climbing.
- Workers cannot carry heavy or bulky items while climbing.
- Workers should not step over the ladder to the roof -- they should step to the side of the ladder onto the roof.
