Backhoe Kills Worker

Backhoe Injury Accident
Workers were adjusting the brakes to a backhoe. The backhoe operator lifted the front wheels off the ground by the use of the front bucket and leaving the backhoe in gear at idle speed. The other worker crawled underneath the backhoe to adjust the brakes. His clothing became wrapped around the drive shaft. This tightening of his cloths broke his neck and he died from his injuries.
Prevention of Similar Construction Fatalities
- Comply with the manufacturer's instructions to adjust the brakes.
- Turn off the backhoe and block wheels before climbing underneath the backhoe.
- Have a safety program in place that covers construction site hazards that workers might face on the job.
- Train workers to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions associated with their work (OSHA Regulation: 29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2)).
