Asphyxiation Accident Kills Worker

Asphyxiation Accident
Worker was in a confined space. The contractor hooked the worker's air supply to the jobsite's air compressor instead of its own. This was against the contractor's policy of using its own air compressors for its employees. The air compressor that contractor used was pumping nitrogen instead of air. The worker suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. He died from his injuries. Unfortunately, these types of construction fatalities happen too often.
Preventing Similar Asphyxiation Construction Site Hazards
- Workers must be instructed to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions associated with their work (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2)).
- Contractor should follow their policy of using its own air compressor or breathing air cylinders for their workers.
- A competent person should routinely inspect all work areas and work procedures to ensure the safety of its workers.
