Excavation Cave-Ins Pose a Serious Threat to Workers on Indiana Construction Sites
Posted on September 21, 2011 by Ronald Todd
Excavation cave-ins happen when trenches are not properly shored; a competent person is not monitoring the changing condition of the trench and when large trucks or equipment are too close to the trench. When a trench cave-in does occur, the workers trapped in the trench can be killed by the weight of the collapsed dirt. The most common cause of excavation construction fatalities is asphyxiation of the worker.
Because of the severity of the injuries that result from an excavation cave-in, OSHA has extensive regulations that cover excavations at construction sites. See 29 CFR 1226 Subpart P -- Excavations; 29 CFR 1926 Subpart S -- Underground construction, caissons, cofferdams, and compressed air, and 29 CFR 1926 Subpart V -- Power transmission and distribution.
