Trench Accidents Kill Indiana Workers
Posted on September 14, 2011 by Ronald Todd
Trench accidents are common construction site hazards and often lead to construction fatalities. Trenches are needed when installing pipes and other buried materials. Accidents occur when trenches are neither shored nor sloped and there are no boxes or shields to protect the workers. The risk of a trench accident increases when there has been a previous cave-in.
To prevent trench accidents, contractors or employers must do the following:
- Shore, slope or otherwise support the sides of trenches to prevent a cave-in (29 CFR 1926.652(c)).
- Protect workers/employees with adequate personal protective equipment (29 CFR 1926.650(e)).
- Provide an adequate means of exit from trenches (29 CFR 1926.652(h)).
- Provide training to workers/employees to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions associated with their work (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2)).
