Powder Actuated Tools Cause Serious Injuries on Indiana Construction Sites
Posted on September 14, 2011 by Ronald Todd
Hand tools are commonplace on Indiana construction sites. The dangers of these hand tools are overlooked. Powder actuated tools are used to drive nails at construction sites. Powder actuated tools are like guns except that they shoot nails instead of bullets. Because of the force of the expelled nail, powder actuated tools can cause construction fatalities. These deaths happen when powder actuated tools are used to drive nails into materials that are not solid enough to prevent the nail to pass through it. When nails pass through, they can strike a co-worker causing severe injuries or death.
To prevent these serious accidents:
- A competent person must make frequent and regular inspection of the jobsite, materials and equipment for construction site hazards (29 CFR 1926.20(b)(2));
- Workers that are exposed to flying nails must be provided with the appropriate personal protective equipment (29 CFR 1926.100(a) and 29 CFR 1926.102(a)(1));
- Workers are provided with training for the safe operation of powder actuated tools (29 CFR 1926.302(e)(2)); and
- Safety plans need to ensure that powder actuated tools are not fired into easily penetrated materials (29 CFR 1926.302(e)(8)).
