Indiana Workers must be Instructed to Recognize and Avoid Unsafe Conditions
Posted on September 14, 2011 by Ronald Todd
The lack of adequate training and education are a major cause of construction fatalities and other construction injuries. These construction accidents would have been prevented if everyone at the job site received training and instruction in the proper operation procedures and are made aware of all potential construction site hazards in their work. OSHA requires that workers must be instructed to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions associated with their work (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2)).
To have trained and educated workers, general contractors and controlling employers need to:
- Develop and maintain a safety and health program to provide guidance for safe operations (29 CFR 1926.20(b)(1));
- Institute, a program for frequent and regular inspections of the job site, as well as materials and equipment by a competent person (29 CFR 1926.20(b)(2));
- Instruct every worker on how to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions which apply to the work and work areas (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2)).
