Indiana Workers are being Injured in Excavation Accidents
Posted on September 14, 2011 by Ronald Todd
Workers are installing pipes. Their excavation has vertical braces for shoring, but no horizontal braces. A pipe tips over and pins a worker. The worker dies. This is an example of a construction excavation accident that could have been prevented if OSHA safety standards had been followed.
Applicable OSHA Safety Standards
- The controlling employer must provide an adequate constructed and braced shoring system for workers in an excavation that may expose the worker to construction site hazards of moving ground (29 CFR 1926.651(c)).
- The controlling employer must provide stronger shoring when heavy equipment is being operated near the excavation (29 CFR 1926.651(q)).
For additional information see:
- Construction Safety and Health Standards (OSHA 2207); and
- Safety and Health in Excavation and Trenching Operations (National Audiovisual Center - Order No 689601).
