Indiana Trench Accidents Kill Workers
Posted on September 14, 2011 by Ronald Todd
Trench accidents are very serious and usually lead to construction fatalities. A common example of a trench accident involves the installation of underground piping. A backhoe is used to clear the trench. The side walls consist of unstable soil that is undermined by sand and water. Water is standing in the trench. The worker in the trench is crushed and killed when the trench wall collapses.
Trench construction site hazards can be avoided when:
- Employers shore, slope sheet or brace sides of trenches in unstable materials (29 CFR 1926.652(b) and 1926.651(c)).
- Employers provide a means of escape from a trench, such as a ladder (29 CFR 1926.652(h)).
- Employers have all trench work inspected by a competent person (29 CFR 1926.650(i)).
- Employers stop all work when there is evidence of cave-ins or slides (29 CFR 1926.650(i)).
- Employers require excavation material moved at least 2 feet from the edge of the trench (29 CFR 1926.651(i)).
- Employers must take extra precautions when heavy equipment is being operated near the trench (29 CFR 1926.651(q)).
For additional information on trenches, see the following resources:
- Construction Safety and Health Standards (OSHA 2207);
- Excavation and Trenching Operations (OSHA 2226);
- Programs through the National Audio Visual Center (Order numbers: 689601, 007516 and 009863).
