Indiana Iron Workers Risk Falls from Height

Posted on September 14, 2011 by Ronald Todd

Iron workers working at elevation run the risk of falls from height. These falls from elevation most often lead to construction site fatalities.

To help prevent the construction site hazards of falls, construction contractors need to do the following:

  1. Require all workers that are exposed to the hazards of falls from height to wear appropriate personal protection equipment (29 CFR 1926.28(a));
  2. Require that all derricks or erection floors are solidly planked or decked over the entire surface except for access openings (29 CFR 1926.750(b)(1)(i));
  3. Ensure that all planking or decking are thick enough to carry the work load (29 CFR 1926.750(b)(1)(i)); and
  4. Ensure that an appropriate safety railing is installed around the periphery of all temporary planked or decked floors (29 CFR 1926.750(b)(1)(iii)).

For additional information see:

  • Construction Safety and Health Standards (OSHA 2207); and
  • OSHA Safety and Health Training Guidelines for Construction (National Technical Information Service Order No. PB-239-309/SET).
