Indiana Construction Workers are being Killed during the Installation of Large Machinery
Posted on September 14, 2011 by Ronald Todd
During construction, new machinery must be installed. These installations can be construction site hazards and can lead to construction fatalities. Large machinery installations can utilize jacks to position the machine into place. If proper safety methods are not used during the installation, the machine can fall and crush any worker near the machine.
If the following OSHA precautions are taken, these construction accidents may be prevented:
- Contractors must create written procedures for the installation of new equipment.
- Employers must educate their employees of the written procedures for the installation of the equipment (1926.21(b)(2)).
- A competent person must inspect the installation to ensure that the written procedures are being followed.
- The new equipment must be cribbed or blocked after it is raised to secure it against movement (1910.244(a)(2)(iii)).
- A competent person must inspect installation equipment prior to its use (1910.244(a)(2)(vi)(a)).
- A competent person must inspect the rigging equipment prior to each shift (1926.251(a)(1)).
For additional information see:
- Construction Safety and Health Standards (OSHA 2207); and
- OSHA Safety and Health Training Guide-lines for Construction (National Technical Information Service - Order No. PB-239-312/AS).
