Indiana Construction Workers are being Injured in Fires/Explosions
Posted on September 14, 2011 by Ronald Todd
At construction sites, workers must work in confined or enclosed spaces. In many instances, the work requires welding. The sparks from the welding can cause fires/explosions. These construction site hazards of fires/explosions exponentially increase when oxygen is also being used. These fire/explosion accidents can result in construction fatalities, severe burns and permanent scarring.
To prevent accidents from fires/explosions under these conditions, the contractor must:
- Not use oxygen for ventilation, cooling or cleaning in welding operations (29 CFR 1926.353(a)(b)).
- Comply with OSHA's confined or enclosed space entry program (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(6)(i)).
- Train workers to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions associated with their work and make sure they understand the confined space entry program and follow its procedures (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2) and 1926.20(b)(1)).
For additional information:
- Construction Safety and Health Standards (OSHA 2207).
- Occupational Fatalities Related to Fire and/or Explosions in Confined Work Spaces as Found in Reports of OSHA Fatality/Catastrophe Investigations (National Technical Information Service - Publication No. PB 82-237-314).
