Indiana Carpenters die from Falls From Height
Posted on September 14, 2011 by Ronald Todd
Falls From Height Accidents
Carpenters were setting trusses. Where they were working, there was an opening to the lower level. The opening had neither guardrails nor cover. One of the carpenters fell through the opening while placing a truss in position. He died from complications of his severe traumatic brain injury and internal injuries.
Prevention of Construction Fatalities as a Result of Falls from Height
- Floor openings must be guarded with standard railings or covers to prevent falls from height (29 CFR 1926.500(b)(1)).
- Workers must be instructed to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions associated with their work (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2)).
Additional Help
- Construction Safety and Health Standards (OSHA 2207).
- Occupational Fatalities Related to Roofs, Ceilings, and Floors as Found in Reports of OSHA Fatality/Catastrophe Investigations (National Technical Information Service - Order No. PB 80-161-136).
