Fixed Ladders are often overlooked as a safety risk at Indiana job sites
Posted on September 14, 2011 by Ronald Todd
Fixed ladder accidents happen because sometimes they are over looked as being construction site hazards. However, when there are risks for falls from height, proper precautions must be taken. Falls from height are the number one reason for construction fatalities.
To protect against a fixed ladder injury, contractors/employers must:
- Provide and require workers to wear fall protection equipment such as a safety harness and lanyard attached to a lifeline with a rope grab (29 CFR 1926.28(a)).
- Instruct workers to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions associated with their work (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2)).
For additional information on fixed ladder safety:
- Construction Safety and Health Standards (OSHA 2207).
- Occupational Fatalities Related to Ladders as Found in Reports of OSHA Fatality/Catastrophe Investigations (National Technical Information Service - Publication No. PB 80-153-471).
