Falls from Roof are a Major Cause of Construction Fatalities in Indiana

Anytime construction workers are on a roof, there is a risk to have falls from height. Falls from roof happen in many different ways and have many different causes. An example of a fall from a roof involved the use of a crawling board/chicken ladder type apparatus. This chicken ladder injury occurred when the ladder broke. The worker fell over 35 feet and was killed.
These chicken ladder accidents / falls from roof can be prevented when:
- Crawling boards/chicken ladders meet at least the minimum design specification for the equipment (29 CFR 1926.451(v)(1)).
- Lifelines are firmly fastened beside each crawling board/chicken ladder for a handhold (29 CFR 1926.451(v)(2)).
- Crawling boards/chicken ladders are firmly secured to the roof (29 CFR 1926.451(v)(3)).
- A safety program is in place to prevent accidents (29 CFR 1926.20(b)(1) and (b)(2)).
- A competent person makes frequent and regular inspections of the work site, materials and equipment.
