Falls from Height through Stairway Openings Result in Wrongful Death Indiana
Posted on September 14, 2011 by Ronald Todd
Indiana workers that are involved in the construction or demolition of stairways encounter numerous construction site hazards. Falls from height through stairway floor openings are the major cause of stair related construction fatalities. These openings are present during the construction or demolition of the stairways. These falls are preventable if safe work practices are utilized by the contractors at the jobsite.
The general contractor must ensure that:
- The general contractor and all of its subcontractors have a safety plan for their work;
- The general contractor and all of its subcontractors have a competent person on site to recognize and prevent unsafe conditions from existing on the jobsite;
- Workers are prohibited from working near floor openings without some form of fall protection (29 CFR 1926.28(a)); and
- Workers are instructed on how to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions which apply to the work and work areas (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2)).
