Falls from Height are the Number 0ne Reason of All Construction Fatalities
Posted on September 14, 2011 by Ronald Todd
Falls from height are the number one cause of construction site fatalities and a major cause of severe injuries such as severe traumatic brain injury, spinal cord paralysis, quadriplegic spinal cord injury and paraplegic spinal cord damage.
Falls from height accidents can be prevented when:
- General contractors require all workers at the jobsite to wear appropriate personal protective equipment in all operations that expose workers to construction site hazards of falling from heights (29 CFR 1926.28(a) and 29 CFR 1926.104(a)).
- General contractors or their subcontractors provide safety nets when workplaces are more than 25 feet above the ground or water surface, or other surfaces where the use of ladders, scaffold, catch platforms, temporary floors, safety lines, or safety harnesses are impractical (29 CFR 1926.105(a)).
- General contracts ensure that suitable ladders are used to gain safe access to all elevations when permanent or temporary stairways or suitable ramps or runways are not present (29 CFR 1926.450(a)(1)).
