Falls are the Number One Reason for Construction Deaths in Indiana
Posted on September 14, 2011 by Ronald Todd
The number one reason for construction fatalities are falls. Each year, there are between 150 to 200 construction fatalities and more than 100,000 construction injuries as a result of falls. Because of the severity and frequency of fall injuries, OSHA has detailed regulations to prevent construction site hazards from falls.
OSHA regulations provide that contractors do the following:
- Where fall protection is needed, the appropriate fall protection systems are used;
- Install and use the correct safety systems as identified by a competent person;
- The work is supervised by a competent person;
- Safe work procedures are created and enforced by a competent person; and
- A competent person oversees the proper selection, use and maintenance of all protection systems.
See OSHA regulations under 29 Code of Federal Regulations, Subpart M, Fall Protection, 1926.500, 1926.501, 1926.502 and 1926.503.
