Construction Site Hazards with Material Hoists
Posted on September 14, 2011 by Ronald Todd
Material hoists are used to carry construction materials up to the work area. They are designed to lift heavy construction materials like bricks to upper levels. They are not meant to transport personnel from one level to another. When workers are being transported with materials in a material hoist, the workers have an increased risk for falls from height. Falls from height are the number one cause for construction fatalities.
To prevent accidents with material hoists:
- Workers must be instructed to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions associated with their work (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2)).
- No one may ride on material hoists except to inspect or maintain them (29 CFR 1926.552(b)(1)(ii)).
