Construction Fatalities occur in Indiana when Fall Protection Gear is not used to Prevent Falls
Posted on September 14, 2011 by Ronald Todd
A worker was standing on a six-inch beam that was laid between two I-beams. The worker did not have any personal fall protection. He lost his balance and fell 14 feet to the concrete floor below. He sustained a severe traumatic brain injury. He later died from his injuries. Falls from height are the number reason for construction fatalities.
To prevent similar accidents, contractors must comply with OSHA by:
- Providing and ensuring that all workers wear fall protection gear when there is a risk of falling (29 CFR 1926.28(a)).
- Guarding floor openings with standard railings (29 CFR 1926.500(b)(1)).
- Establishing a safety program to prevent accidents (29 CFR 1926.20(b)(1) and (b)(2)).
- Having a competent person perform frequent and regular inspections of job sites, materials, and equipment to identify construction site hazards (29 CFR 1926.20(b)(1) and (b)(2)).
For additional help:
- Construction Safety and Health Standards (OSHA 2207).
- Occupational Fatalities related to Roofs, Ceilings, and Floors as Found in Reports of OSHA Fatality/Catastrophe Investigations (National Technical Information Services - Publication No. PB-80-161-136).
