Avoiding Crane Accidents on Indiana Construction Sites
Posted on September 14, 2011 by Ronald Todd
Cranes are used on Indiana construction sites to lift heavy loads. Because of their size and the loads that they carry, crane accidents result in construction fatalities and other serious injuries such as severe traumatic brain injury, spinal cord damage, quadriplegic injury or paraplegic injury. These crane accidents occur when the crane is not adequate for the lift, the crane has mechanical defects or there is a crane operator error.
To prevent crane accidents, general contractors need to do the following at every construction site:
- All crane operators on the jobsite are properly trained and qualified to operate the crane and do the work that needs to be performed (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2) and 29 CFR 1926.550(b), and ANSI B30.5 5-3.1.2).
- All contractors using cranes on the jobsite have written procedures to insure the method for lifting is within the manufacturer's specifications (29 CFR 1926.500(a)(1)).
