A Scaffold Injury can happen in Adverse Winter Conditions

Posted on September 14, 2011 by Ronald Todd

As winter approaches, weather conditions can increase the risks for construction site hazards. For example, laborers were working on scaffold covered with ice and snow. The scaffold had other dangers of inadequate planking, no guardrails or no access ladder to the various scaffold levels. A worker slipped and fell from heights resulting in wrongful death. Falls from height are the number one reason for construction fatalities.

Preventing a scaffold injury in adverse conditions, contractors must:

  1. Install standard guardrails and toeboards on the scaffold (29 CFR 1926.451(d)(10)).
  2. Remove ice and snow and eliminate slippery conditions on the scaffold (29 CFR 1926.451(a)(17)).
  3. Provide ladder or the equivalent to access the different scaffold levels (29 CFR 1926.451(a)(13)).

For additional information:

  • Construction Safety and Health Standards (OSHA 2207).
  • OSHA Safety and Health Training Guidelines for Construction (National Technical Information Service - Order No. PB-239-312/AS)
