Use of Ladders at Construction Sites are a Major Cause of Falls from Height

Posted on August 07, 2011 by Ronald Todd

Ladders are Construction Site Hazards

All construction sites use ladders to get workers from one level to another. Ladder injuries account for a large percentage of all injuries at construction projects. Ladder accidents happen for numerous reasons, such as legs slipping or sliding out, ladder falling over, or worker falling off ladder.

Preventing Construction Fatalities from Ladders

  • Ladders must be extended at least 3 feet above the roof (29 CFR 1926.1053(a)(1)).
  • Top of a ladder must be secured (29 CFR 1926.1053(a)(1)).
  • Ladders cannot be overloaded (29 CFR 1926.1053(a)(1)).
  • Workers must be trained to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions associated with their work that might cause a ladder or scaffold injury (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2)).
  • General contractors must establish a safety program/plan to prevent accidents. The program or plan must include for frequent and regular inspections of the job sites, materials and equipment by a competent person (29 CFR 1926.20(b)(1) and (b)(2)).
