Scaffold Accidents are Responsible for Construction Fatalities

Posted on August 07, 2011 by Ronald Todd

Don't let Scaffold Accidents take Control of your Life

A scaffold injury at a construction site can happen in many different ways. A worker can be knocked off an unprotected scaffold or fall off a faulty suspension scaffold when not properly tied off. Most of these injuries should have been prevented if the safety precautions were implemented and enforced.

Scaffold Safety Protects Workers from Falls from Height

  • Scaffolding must install guardrails on all open sides and ends (29 CFR 1926.451(a)(4)).
  • Scaffolds must have attachment components capable of sustaining four times the maximum load (29 CFR 1926.451(i)(2)).
  • Two-point suspension scaffolds must use tie backs as secondary anchorage (29 CFR 1926.451(i)(4)).
  • Workers on scaffolds must be trained to recognize and avoid scaffold construction site hazards (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2)).
  • Workers must be provided and use lifelines attached to substantial members of the structure and not to the scaffold for protection (29 CFR 1926.451(i)(8)).
  • General contractors must have a safety plan to prevent accidents. The safety plan must include frequent and regular inspections of job sites, materials and equipment by a competent person (29 CFR 1926.20(b)(1)).
  • General contractors must have procedures to ensure that materials do not fall from scaffolds onto workers below (29 CFR 1926.5(a)(1)).
