Posted on August 07, 2011 by Ronald Todd
The Danger of Electrocution Injuries is ever present at Construction Sites
An electrocution accident can happen in a variety of different ways at a construction site. The construction site hazards of electricity can strike when:
- Workers come into contact with an exposed electrical wire;
- Workers perform maintenance on a piece of equipment that wasn't properly locked out and tagged;
- Construction equipment, such as cranes, come into contact with overhead power lines;
- Excavations that uncover buried cables; and
- Ladders or scaffolding is positioned too close to overhead power lines.
Prevention of Electrocution Accidents
Most electrocution accidents are preventable when safety plans are created and enforced to eliminate electrical accidents. Some of the areas that need to be covered are:
- A safety program that identifies construction hazards that might cause an electrocution injury (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2);
- Procedures to comply with OSHA regulations under 29 CFR 1926.402 through 1926.408.
- A training program that educates worker on the recognition and avoidance of electrical hazards (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2)).
- Eliminating work areas near energized power lines (29 CFR 1926.400(c)(1)).
- Requiring all power lines to be guarded against accidental contact, by insulating them or de-energizing the lines or by other means that will protect workers (29 CFR 1926.400(c)(1)).
- Procedures for locking out and tagging out equipment;
- Providing electrical testing and detecting equipment to identify any electrical hazards.
- Methods to comply with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
- Have a competent person perform frequent and regular job site inspections to identify and eliminate construction site hazards (29 CFR 1926.20(b)(1) and (b)(2)).
- Provisions to have safety equipment for workers to protect them against electrocution injuries.
