Workers Die from Falls from Height when Scaffolds are Improperly Constructed
Posted on August 06, 2011 by Ronald Todd
Falls occur when scaffolding is not properly constructed and maintained
Falls from height and falls from roof are the most common reason of all construction fatalities. Every year, approximately 400 workers are involved in a fatal fall. This trend is on the upswing. A major cause of all falls is scaffold defects.
Scaffolds have limited space for workers to do their jobs. Workers must use machinery and building materials in these small work areas. Without fall protection and safe access, scaffolds become construction site hazards. Scaffold injuries range from minor aches and pains to construction fatalities.
How do You Avoid a Scaffold Accident
- Follow manufacturer's instructions and warnings when constructing, maintaining and using scaffolds
- Scaffolds more than 10 feet above the lower level must either have a guardrail system or a personal fall arrest system (See 29 CFR 1926 Subpart M, 29 CFR 1926.501 and 29 CFR 1926.502)
- Scaffolds must have a safe access to the scaffold platforms (See 29 CFR 1926 Subpart L and 29 CFR 1926.451)
- Never climb cross bracing to access the scaffold platforms
