Electrical Hazards Cause Construction Fatalities

Electrical Construction Site Hazards
Construction workers jobs are often near power lines. The power lines put workers at risk for electrocution injuries. General contractors and other contractors often fail to ensure that power lines are properly de-energized or protected before work begins. This leads to electrocution accidents.
Another electrical risk of electrocution is the improper use and maintenance of power tools. The greatest risk of an electrocution injury from a power tool involves the power tool's cord, extension cord that power tool is plugged into, receptacles the tool is plugged into, short-circuits of the tool and exposed wires. Because power tools have a lot of wear and tear at a construction project, a competent person must inspect all power tools, extension cords and receptacles to recognize and to prevent unsafe conditions existing with the power tools. (29 CFR 1926.20(b)(1) and (b)(2)). Any tools found to have exposed wires, missing ground prongs or other defect must be taken out of service and marked as defective.
Contractors must have a safety plan/program that is established to prevent accident. It must include frequent and regular inspections of the job site, materials and equipment by a competent person (29 CFR 1926.20(b)(1)). Contractors are also required under OSHA regulations to have an assured equipment conductor program or use ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) for receptacles. Section 527.6 of the NEC requires ground protection for temporary wiring.
