Worker Falls From Height to His Death
An iron worker is connecting X-braces to bar joists. Only one end of the bar joist is welded. The iron worker is working at the unwelded end. The worker slips. The bar joist becomes dislodged. The worker falls from roof to his death.
Prevention of Construction Site Hazards from Falls
This construction accident could have been prevented if the general contractor and its subcontractors had:
- Installed a center row of bolted bridging to the bar joist to provide lateral stability before slacking the hoisting line (29 CFR 1926.751(c)(2)).
- Provided a training program to ensure workers were qualified by experience or training to erect steel (29 CFR 1926.20(b)(1)).
- Performed worker training to recognize and avoid construction site hazards in joist erection (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2)).
