Confined Spaces Endanger Construction Workers
Posted on August 29, 2011 by Ronald Todd
Confined spaces are construction site hazards and can cause construction fatalities if proper safety measures are not taken. The major cause of construction fatalities in confined space accidents is asphyxiation from oxygen deficiency. If OSHA safety regulations are followed, confined space hazards can be minimized. These safety regulations include:
- Workers are instructed to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions associated with their work and their work environment (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2)).
- Workers are instructed on the construction site hazards involved in entering confined or enclosed spaces (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(i) and 29 CFR 1926.21(b)(ii))
- Workers are provided and required to use appropriate respiratory protection (29 CFR 1926.103(a)(1) and 29 CFR 1910.134).
