Injuries to children
Posted on August 28, 2011 by Ronald Todd
Most head injuries to children are often minor and external but on rare occasions a head injury can cause bruising or bleeding in the brain. This type of traumatic brain injury or TBI requires immediate medical attention.
Symptoms of moderate or severe head injuries are:
- unconsciousness or unresponsiveness
- blood or clear fluid running from the ear or nose
- changes in behavior such as lethargy, aggravation or sleepiness
- dizziness
- seizures
- vomiting up to three times or even several hours after the injury
- a severe or worsening headache as time goes on
What to do after a TBI:
- Call 911 immediately. Do not attempt to move a child that is unconscious
- Perform CPR if the child is not breathing
- Call the doctor if the child's injury appears minor or if the child does not stop crying
How to prevent traumatic brain injuries:
- Child proof your home - "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!"
- Avoid using child or infant walkers
Make sure your children use the proper head gear when playing sports such as biking, skateboarding, and rollerblading.
