Electrocution Injuries on Indiana Construction Sites

Electrocution Accident
Two workers were spreading concrete from a concrete pumper truck. One of the workers was moving the hose (elephant trunk) of the pumper truck to pour the concrete. The boom of the pumper truck made contact with overhead power lines. The worker using the hose received electrocution injuries. The worker fell on the other worker, who received electrical shock and burns.
Prevention of Electrical Construction Fatalities by Following OSHA
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that:
- Workers are trained to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions which apply to the work environment (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2)).
- Equipment must not come within ten feet of electrical distribution or transmission lines rated 50 KV or less unless the line has been de-energized and visually grounded or unless there is insulating barriers (29 CFR 1926.600(a)(6)).
Other Sources of Help Related to Electrical Construction Site Hazards
- OSHA General Industry Standards (CFR parts 1900-1910)
- OSHA Construction Standards (CFR part 1926)
- OSHA Safety and Health Training Guidelines for Construction (National Technical Information Service - Order No. PB-239-312/AS)
- Electrical Standards for Construction (OSHA 3097)
- Ground-Fault Protection on Construction Sites (OSHA 3007)
