Construction Fatalities from Powder-Actuated Tools

Posted on August 24, 2011 by Ronald Todd

Equipment Construction Accident Indiana

Carpenters were building a wall. The workers were on opposite sides of the wall. One of the carpenters was driving nails with a powder-actuated tool. The nail fired from the powder-actuated tool penetrated the stud and plywood partition before striking the other worker. The worker died from his injuries.

Avoiding Powder-Actuated Tool Construction Site Hazards

  1. Before using powder-actuated tools, workers must be trained in the proper operation of the tool (29 CFR 1926.302(e)(1)).
  2. Any materials that can easily be penetrated by a nail and create a flying projectile must be protected by a non-penetrable backing (29 CFR 1926.302(e)(8)).
  3. All workers must be safeguarded with eye protection when using powder-actuated tools (29 CFR 1926.302(a)(12)).
