Trench Cave-In Accident
Workers were replacing a filter tank at a construction site. After removing the tank, the workers entered the trench to level the bottom. The trench was approximately 9 feet deep. The sides of the trench were neither sloped nor shored. One side of the trench collapsed killing one of the workers and seriously injuring the other.
Prevention of Excavation Construction Fatalities
- Contractors must instruct workers to recognize and avoid unsafe construction site hazards associated with their work (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2)).
- Trenches must be shored, braced, sloped or otherwise supported to protect against construction fatalities (29 CFR 1926.652(b)).
- Workers must have personal protective equipment to prevent possible head injuries (29 CFR 1926.650(e)).
Additional Sources of Trench Safety
- OSHA General Industry Standards (CFR parts 1900-1910).
- OSHA Construction Standards (CFR part 19260).
- OSHA Safety and Health Training Guidelines for Construction (National Technical Information Service - Order No. PB-239-312/AS).
