Construction Worker Falls from Height to his Death
Posted on August 20, 2011 by Ronald Todd
Falls from Height Kill Workers
Worker was suspended from a crane. He was wearing a harness that was hooked to the load line. The crane operator improperly swung the arm that separated the load line. The worker fell from heights and died.
Recommendations to Prevent Similar Construction Fatalities
- The contractor should provide conventional means for workers to reach their work sites such as ladders, personnel hoist, aerial lifts, elevated work platforms or scaffolds (29 CFR 1926.550(g)(2)).
- The contractor should have a competent person review and test all equipment used in hoisting workers to determine that all systems, controls and safety devices are functioning properly (29 CFR 1926.550(g)(5)).
- The contractor should only allow properly trained workers to operate equipment and machinery (29 CFR 1926.20(b)(4)).
- The contractor should provide appropriate personal protective equipment such as harnesses and lanyards when workers are exposed to construction site hazards (29 CFR 1926.28(a)).
- Crane or derrick operators should comply with manufacturer's specifications (29 CFR 1926.550(a)(1)).
