Construction Accident Indiana Caused by Trench Cave-in
Posted on August 20, 2011 by Ronald Todd
Trench Cave-In While Digging a Ditch with a Backhoe
It is far too common that backhoe operators are injured in a trench cave-in. These construction site hazards lead to construction fatalities when the backhoe operator falls into the trench and is covered with collapsing soil. These tragic accidents could have been prevented by following OSHA regulations that require:
- Trenches must be shored, sheeted, braced, sloped or otherwise supported if the sides are unstable or soft material more than five feet in depth (29 CFR 1926.652(a)).
- Contractors must instruct every worker in the recognition and avoidance of unsafe conditions and the regulations applicable to his work environment to control or eliminate any construction site hazards (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2)).
