What You Need to Know if You are Involved in a Car Accident Indiana

Posted on August 19, 2011 by Ronald Todd

What do you do after a car accident Indiana?

Car accidents often occur when a driver acts carelessly. You have the right to expect other drivers will use reasonable care to avoid causing a traffic accident. This does not always happen. In 2009, there were over 5.5 million auto accidents with 33,808 fatal crashes. If you are in a car accident, you should remember to:

  1. Stop and Notify the Police: Any driver involved in a traffic accident must stop at the scene. You should not move the cars unless their positions are causing a dangerous condition.
  2. Help for the Injured: If anybody is injured in the motor vehicle collision, call 911. The 911 operator will dispatch both the police and ambulance. You should not treat an injured person unless you have proper training. You should wait for the emergency crew to arrive. You should also not move an injured person unless they are in a life threatening situation. Moving an injured person can make their injuries worse.
  3. Exchange Vital Information: You should obtain the name, address of the other driver; the name, address and policy number of the other driver's insurance company; information from the other driver's license, registration and insurance company; and a copy of the name, badge number and agency of the police officer investigating the auto accident.
  4. Make no Statement to Other Driver: Only obtain the information above from the other driver. Don't discuss the accident or argue with the other driver. Tell your version of the accident to the police officer.
  5. Witness Information: Obtain the name, address and phone number of all witnesses to the accident. You should not count on the police to obtain this information. Many times the police do not get the information or the witness leaves before the police arrive.
  6. Seek Any Medical Treatment that you Need: You should immediately obtain treatment for your injuries at an emergency room or at your doctor's office. Make sure that you tell the doctor every complaint and injury that you have. By telling the doctor about you injuries, you are helping the doctor help you.
  7. Notify Your Insurance Company: Your insurance policy requires that you notify your insurance company immediately. If you fail to notify them, they may be able to refuse to cover any claims as a result of the accident.
