Low Speed Car Accident Indiana
Posted on August 19, 2011 by Ronald Todd
A large percentage of claims for injuries in auto collisions involve low speed. In these low speed collisions, there may be little or no damage to the vehicles.
Rear End Collision
The rear end collisions are the most common type of traffic accidents with approximately 2.6 million rear end collisions every year. Car crashes can be expected to increase with the use of cell phones and other driver distraction features being added to automobiles.
In general, the law presumes the rear ending driver is at fault when there is a rear-end collision. The rule is based on the idea that the rear ending driver has failed to maintain a sharp lookout and/or was following too closely to avoid the collision. A rear ending driver can rebut the presumption of fault in situations where the other driver negligently created the hazard that the following car could not avoid. For example, if a car makes an inappropriate lane change and is struck in the rear, the striking vehicle may be able to overcome the presumption of fault and escape liability.
Side Impact Collision
A second type of low impact collisions is the side impact crash. These crashes are generally very serious. The side impact jolts your body from side to side. This jolting makes it more likely for a severe traumatic brain injury, neck injury, spinal cord injury and shoulder injury Even seat belts cannot completely prevent injuries from a side impact collision. Injuries to the head, neck, shoulder, chest, arms and legs are common from side impact crashes.
Frontal Impact Collision
Just as serious as the side impact crash is the frontal impact crash. Frontal collisions are perhaps the most terrifying since the occupants can generally see the crash coming. This fear, in turn, causes individuals to automatically tense up which leads to worse injuries than had they been relaxed and remained limber. Injuries caused by frontal collisions are often the most serious because of the expansiveness of the injuries - from external injuries, such as broken bones and lacerations to internal bleeding, organ ruptures, herniated disc injury, spinal paralysis and traumatic brain injury Indiana. Frontal collisions are the leading cause of traffic fatalities and wrongful death Indiana.
Rollover Crashes
While the number of rollover crashes is relatively low, they can still cause very serious injuries. Ejection from the vehicle, which happens frequently in a rollover accident, is the primary cause of death.
The National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration reported that approximately 60% of sport utility vehicles were involved in rollover accidents. In addition, approximately 40% of fatalities occurred due to pickup trucks involved in rollovers.
