An Iron Worker Falls from Heights to his Death
Iron workers were erecting "I" beams. One of the workers was attaching a choker sling to the beam. The crawler tower crane was booming away from the steel when a gust of wind blow the stringer into the beam the worker was working on. The beam moved, and the worker fell from heights to his death.
Prevention of Other Similar Falls from Height
- When structure does not accommodate temporary flooring and where scaffolds are not used, contractors must install and maintain safety nets if workers are working more than two stories or 25 feet above the ground to prevent construction fatalities (29 CFR 1926.750(b)(1)(ii)).
- Tag lines must be used to control crane loads hoisted during structural steel assembly (29 CFR 1926.751(d)).
- During erecting of steel structural members, all members must be secured with a least two bolts or the equivalent at each connection. The bolts must be drawn up tight before the load is released from the hoisting line (29 CRF 1926.751(a)).
