Worker Killed While Working in a Trench
Workers were digging a trench about four feet from a brick wall. The trenched collapsed and the wall fell on a worker. The worker died from his injuries. The contractor was cited by OSHA for failing to protect worker from construction site hazards.
Prevention of Similar Construction Fatalities
- Contractor must protect workers from construction site hazards in excavating near the base of a wall (29 CFR 1926.651(i)(1)).
- Contractors must instruct each worker in the recognition and avoidance of unsafe conditions and the regulations applicable to his work environment to control or eliminate any hazards (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2)).
- Have a competent person regularly and frequently inspect the jobsite, including materials and equipment, to assure compliance with OSHA standards (29 CFR 1926.20(b)(2).
