Electrocution Accident Kills Construction Worker
Worker was finishing a punch list that included two non-operational overhead lights. He did not shut off the power at the circuit breaker panel. He also failed to test the wires to see if they were live. He touched the wires. He was electrocuted and suffered a ladder injury when he fell.
Prevention of Electrocution Injuries
- Contractors must not allow work to be performed on electrical circuits unless an effective lock-out/tag-out program is implemented (29 CFR 1926.416(a)(1)).
- Contractors must not allowed work to be done on energized electrical circuits or circuits which are not positively de-energized or tagged out (29 CFR 1926.417(a) and 417(c)).
- Every worker must be instructed on how to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions which apply to their work and their work areas (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2)).
- A contractor must have a safety program to prevent accidents. The safety program must require frequent and regular inspections of the job sites and equipment by a competent person (29 CFR 1926(20(b)(1)).
