Construction Worker in Confined Space Dies from Asphyxiation
Workers were sandblasting the surfaces in a confined space in preparation for painting. They were using air compressors to supply air to the workers. The air compressor was needed at a different location. Arrangements were made for the workers to connect to the plant's air supply. Unfortunately, someone at the plant shut down the plant's air compressor. The nitrogen back-up system kicked in to maintain pressure. One of the workers was asphyxiated from the nitrogen.
Prevent Construction Fatalities from Asphyxiation
- Contractors must train workers on the use of respirators in areas that asphyxiation can occur (29 CFR 1926.103(c)(1)).
- Contractors must use compressors that have high-temperature and/or carbon monoxide alarms (29 CFR 1926.103(f)).
- Contractors must know the type of back-up systems before using any air system for breathing because many use nitrogen.
- Contractors must have a safety plan to ensure a competent person makes frequent and regular inspections of the job site (29 CFR 1926.20(b)(2).
- Contractors must educate workers in the recognition and avoidance of construction site hazards (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2).
