Impaired Driving is a Big Problem Causing 1/3 of all Fatal Accidents

Posted on August 18, 2011 by Ronald Todd

Younger Drivers have a Higher Risk of Dying in a Drunk Driving Accident than Older Drivers

Every day, 30 people die in an alcohol related accident. Younger drivers have a greater risk of being in an impaired driving accident than older drivers. Drivers between the age of 21 and 24 make up one out of every three fatalities involving drunk drivers. As you get older the risk decreases (31% for drivers between 25 and 34 and 25% of drivers between the ages of 35 and 44).

Motorcyclists Who Drink have a Greater Risk of being in Fatal Motorcycle Accidents

Approximately 30% of motorcyclists that were killed in a traffic accident had a blood alcohol level (BAC) of .08 or more. Motorcyclists who were 40 or older accounted for almost half of riders killed in fatal motorcycle accidents. Cyclists ages 40 to 44 made up of 44% of these deaths.

The Majority of all Fatal Accidents involved Drivers with a Prior DUI Conviction

Impaired drivers with a prior DUI conviction are responsible for the majority of impaired driving fatalities. As a result, law enforcement has stepped up its efforts against drunk driving laws including the use of sobriety checkpoints. More drunk drivers are losing their driver's license and are being required to be assessed and treated for their alcohol abuse.
