Iron Worker Falls from Height because he Failed to have Proper Fall Protection
Posted on August 17, 2011 by Ronald Todd
An iron worker was working off a six-inch beam lain between two I-beams. The worker failed to have any personal fall protection. He lost his balance and fell to the concrete floor below. He received a fatal severe traumatic brain injury. Falls from height are the number one reason for construction fatalities. To prevent similar construction accidents, OSHA requires that general contractors and framing contractors:
- Provide and ensure that all workers have fall protection when working at heights (29 CFR 1926.28(a)).
- Have guards for floor openings with standard railings (29 CFR 1926.500(b)(1)).
- Establish a safety program/plan to prevent construction site accidents (29 CFR 1926.20(b)(1) and (b)(2)).
- Have a competent person perform frequent and regular inspections of job sites, materials and equipment to identify and eliminate construction site hazards (29 CFR 1926.20(b)(1) and (b)(2)).
For additional help:
- Construction Safety and Health Standards (OSHA 2207).
- Occupational Fatalities related to Roofs, Ceilings, and Floors as Found in Reports of OSHA Fatality/Catastrophic Investigations (National Technical Information Services - Order No. PB-80-161-136).
- OSHA Safety and Health Training Guidelines for Construction (National Technical Information Services - Order No. PB-239-309/SET).
