Indiana Sees Drop in Fatal Car Crashes
Posted on August 17, 2011 by Ronald Todd
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Statistics Show a Drop in Car Accident Fatalities
The number of fatal car accidents in Indiana decreased from 820 deaths in 2008 to 693 deaths in 2009. However, the alcohol impaired driving fatalities increased slightly from 2008 (206 fatalities) to 2009 (210 fatalities). The decrease of overall fatalities associated from a car accident Indiana is a good sign that automobiles are being made safer and that police are focusing patrols in high fatal traffic accident areas.
This trend corresponds to what is seen on a national basis. In 2008, there were 37,423 deaths caused by an automobile accident. In 2009, there were 3,615 less fatal injuries than in 2008. In fact, total injuries from car accidents have decreased from 2008 to 2009 by 129,000. Unlike Indiana, deaths from alcohol related accidents in the United States have decreased by 7.4% from 2008 to 2009.
Children Car Accident Injuries and Fatalities
Serious injuries to children can be devastating to the entire family. In 2009, 199 children were injured or killed in Indiana from a drunk driver (See Indiana State Police Statistics). Over 11 percent of all children killed in traffic accidents and 6 percent of children receiving incapacitating injuries were involved in a drunk driving accident. These injuries and deaths in children have been declining since 2005.
