Indiana Motorcyclist Statistics show importance of helmets

Posted on August 10, 2011 by Ronald Todd

Motorcyclist fatalities have increased by an annual average of 4 since 2000, but decreased by 19 from 2008 to 2009. Among motorcycle operators involved in traffic collisions, operators ages 15 to 20 were most likely to not have been properly licensed. Over 70 percent of 15 to 20 year-olds involved in collisions in 2009 did not have proper motorcycle endorsements, a 0.8 percentage point increase from 2008.

Overall in 2009, 59.8 percent of motorcyclists killed in crashes did not have motorcycle endorsements. In the seventy-seven percent of the fatal motorcycle accidents in 2009, the riders were not wearing a helmet, which was a 5.9 percentage point increase from 2008. From 2005 to 2009, the incidence of unhelmeted motorcyclists involved in fatal motorcycle accidents decreased by 4 percent annually, compared to 2.2 percent for all fatal motorcycle accidents (regardless of helmet use).

With warmer weather comes the increased risk of fatal motorcycle accidents in Indiana. As the statistics show, the number of unhelmeted motorcyclists killed in collisions has decreased compared to the 2.2 percent for all fatal motorcycle accidents.
