Falls from Height through Stairways Kill Workers on the Jobsite
Posted on August 10, 2011 by Ronald Todd
Construction workers, which are usually framers, build stairways. They encounter numerous construction hazards. Falls from height through stairway floor openings are a major case of stairway related construction fatalities. These openings are present during the construction of the stairways. Falls are preventable if safe work practices are used by everyone at the jobsite. The general contractor must ensure that:
- The general contractor and all of its subcontractors have a safety plan for their work (29 CFR 1926.20(b)(1) and (b)(2));
- The general contractor and all of its subcontractors have a competent person on site to recognize and prevent unsafe conditions from existing on the jobsite (29 CFR 1926.20(b)(1) and (b)(2);
- Workers must have some form of fall protection when working near floor openings (29 CFR 1926.28(a)); and
- Workers must be instructed on how to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions which apply to their work and their work area (29 CFR 1926.219(b)(2)).
