Everyday Indiana Workers are Exposed to Electrical Hazards

Posted on August 10, 2011 by Ronald Todd

Electrocution Injuries

At a construction site, workers are exposed to electrical hazards. Without the proper precautions, an electrocution accident can happen. OSHA has regulations to eliminate accidents. OSHA regulations provide that the general contractor and other subcontractors must:

  1. De-energize all circuits before beginning work on them (29 CFR 1926.416(a)(3)).
  2. Tagout and lockout all equipment or circuits prior to working with the equipment or circuit (29 CFR 1926.417(a)).
  3. Train workers to recognize and avoid construction site hazards associated with their work and work area (29 CFR 1926.21(b)(2)).
  4. Establish a safety program/plan to prevent accidents. The program or plan must include for frequent and regular inspections of the job sites, materials and equipment by a competent person (29 CFR 1926.20(b)(1) and (b)(2)).

For additional help to avoid construction fatalities

  • Construction Safety and Health Standards (OSHA 2207)
  • OSHA Safety and Health Training Guidelines for Construction (National Technical Information Service - Order No. PB-239-312/AS).

If you are injured at a construction site, you don't have to settle for your workers compensation benefits

You do not have to settle for workers compensation after your construction site injury. Because several organizations work at a construction site, many parties may be liable for injuries. Other liable parties include the general contractor, other subcontractors, construction managers and engineering professionals. Manufacturers of construction machinery may also be liable for accidents.

Both general and subcontractors have legal obligations to provide a construction site that is safe for workers.

A general contractor is responsible for overall job site safety at the project and must ensure that OSHA regulations are followed. Although the general contractor is ultimately responsible for construction site safety, any subcontractor working on the project must also ensure safety and compliance with OSHA regulations.
