Falls from Roof at a Construction Site

Falls from Height are a Major Reason for Construction Fatalities and other Major Construction Site Injuries

The number one reason of construction fatalities and the number two reason for major injuries such as brain injury, paralysis injury, paraplegic injury, quadriplegic injury and spinal cord damage at a construction site are falls from height.

Falls from Roof are Construction Site Hazards that Lead to Construction Fatalities

According to OSHA, a low-slope roofs, an employer must protect his workers at a construction site from falls if there is an unprotected edge or side and the worker may fall 6 feet or more. The employer must protect against falls from roofs by guardrail systems, safety net systems, personal fall arrest systems or a combination of different systems. (See 29 Code of Federal Regulations, Subpart M, Fall Protection, 1926.500, 1926.501, 1926.502 and 1926.503).

In regards to steep roofs, OSHA requires protection when there is an unprotected side or edge and the worker may fall 6 feet or more. This protection must consist of a guardrail system with toe boards, safety net systems or personal fall arrest systems. (See 29 Code of Federal Regulations, Subpart M, Fall Protection, 1926.500, 1926.501, 1926.502 and 1926.503).

Falls from Roof are Preventable if the Proper Precautions are Taken

Falls from height, which include falls from a roof, are the single greatest cause of construction fatalities and a major cause of injuries such as brain injury, paralysis injury, paraplegic injury, quadriplegic injury and spinal cord damage. With the proper precautions, these constructions site hazards can be eliminated or reduced.
