Electrocution Injuries at a Construction Site

Posted on November 04, 2011 by Ronald Todd

How Electrocution Injuries happen at a Construction Site

There are many ways a construction worker may have an electrocution accident. Some of these include:

  • Construction worker touching an exposed electrical wire.
  • Construction worker coming into contact with equipment that doesn't have the proper lockout and tagout.
  • Machinery, such as cranes, coming in contact with overhead power lines.
  • Excavations that hit a buried cable.
  • Ladder accidents involving electrical wires.

Construction Contractors can Prevent an Electrocution Accident at a Construction Site by:

  • Having a comprehensive safety program identifying the construction hazards that might lead to electrocution injuries;
  • Complying with OSHA sections 29 CFR 1926.402 through 1926.408;
  • Training their employees of construction site hazards that can cause an electrocution accident;
  • Developing lockout and tagout procedures to prevent electrical construction site hazards;
  • Providing electrical energy testing and detection equipment to identify a possible electrocution accident before it happens;
  • Complying with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC);
  • Conducting a jobsite inspection to identify construction site hazards that might cause an electrocution accident; and
  • Providing proper safety equipment to their workers to prevent electrocution injuries.

When construction contractors eliminate these construction site hazards, construction fatalities from an electrocution accident can be eliminated or reduced. Electrocution injuries are preventable.
